Taking Control of Redundancy in Scripted Tutorial Dialogue
نویسندگان
چکیده
We describe extensions to a finite-state dialogue manager and its author scripting language that enable control over content repetition during tutorial dialogue. The problem of controlling redundancy requires the specification of complex conditions on the discourse history that are beyond the capabilities of the intended users of the scripting language. We show that the problem can be addressed by adding semantic labelling and the marking of optional steps and difficulty levels to the scripting language and heuristic algorithms to the dialogue manager.

Evaluating State Representations for Reinforcement Learning of Turn-Taking Policies in Tutorial Dialogue
Learning and improving natural turn-taking behaviors for dialogue systems is a topic of growing importance. In task-oriented dialogue where the user can engage in task actions in parallel with dialogue, unrestricted turn taking may be particularly important for dialogue success. This paper presents a novel Markov Decision Process (MDP) representation of dialogue with unrestricted turn taking an...
متن کاملTowards Automated Generation of Scripted Dialogue: Some Time-Honoured Strategies
The main aim of this paper is to introduce automated generation of scripted dialogue as a worthwhile topic of investigation. In particular the fact that scripted dialogue involves two layers of communication, i.e., uni-directional communication between the author and the audience of a scripted dialogue and bi-directional pretended communication between the characters featuring in the dialogue, ...
متن کاملExploring the Effects of Redundancy within a Tutorial Dialogue System: Restating Students' Responses
Although restating part of a student’s correct response correlates with learning and various types of restatements have been incorporated into tutorial dialogue systems, this tactic has not been tested in isolation to determine if it causally contributes to learning. When we explored the effect of tutor restatements that support inference on student learning, it did not benefit all students equ...
متن کاملDialogue as Discourse: Controlling Global Properties of Scripted Dialogue
This paper explains why scripted dialogue shares some crucial properties with discourse. In particular, when scripted dialogues are generated by a Natural Language Generation system, the generator can apply revision strategies that cannot normally be used when the dialogue results from an interaction between autonomous agents (i.e., when the dialogue is not scripted). The paper explains that th...
متن کاملGenerating under Global Constraints: the Case of Scripted Dialogue
Recently, the view of Natural Language Generation (nlg) as a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (csp) has seen something of a revival. The aim of this paper is to examine the issues that arise when nlg is viewed as a csp, and to introduce a novel application of constraint-based nlg, namely the Scripted Dialogue. Scripted Dialogue shares a number of crucial features with discourse, which make it po...
